Western Dressage encompasses fundamental training and riding techniques with the desire to strengthen the trust and understanding between horse and rider. The "Western" piece comes from the traditions and heritage of horsemanship utilizing light contact while seeking to understand and build the relationship of horse and rider through communication. "Dressage" is actually the classical training and elements resulting from historical military training designed to develop the strength, capabilities and partnership of the horse. In combining the two, the goal is to have riders with greater awareness of how to enhance their horse through communication and proper riding as well as how to improve their horses' carriage, balance and athletic ability skills which transcend any discipline. The Western Dressage Association of America (WDAA) is our parent organization, which promotes this discipline via educational opportunities and schooling events. The WDAA also has close ties to the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), which is already acknowledging Western Dressage in the Morgan breed, with the promise of USEF status in early 2012. We are very excited to have this distinction of the exclusive alliance to the USEF. Thus the WDAA and its Minnesota Affiliate will be the only group offering recognized shows with certified judges and point tallies. For more information about the Western Dressage Association of Minnesota, please contact co-founders Karen Meyers kmeyers01@frontier.com or AnnMarie Hernick Brockhouse athernick@hotmail.com.
