Camp Butwin, located in Eagan, MN, is seeking Horse Specialists to facilitate our horseback riding specialty area this summer! An ideal candidate is creative, enthusiastic, FUN, and brings several years of previous experience in caring for and riding horses - experience instructing is a plus! Our "Camp Corral" area is home to 16-18 horses each summer, as well as two small goats! Campers in grades 1-6 visit the "Horse Corral" area to participate in age-appropriate activities, ranging from feeding and petting goats for our youngest campers, to trail-riding the trails of Lebanon Hills Park for our older campers! Dates: Staff Orientation: June 10-14 Summer Camp: June 17-August 16 Please include with your application a brief cover letter detailing your experience in camping, outdoor education, and ropes course/climbing. A little bit about our camp: Camp Butwin is nestled on 88 acres of beautiful natural wooded land and hosts hundreds of children each summer. Campers spend their days swimming, horseback riding, boating, climbing on our rock walls, learning from our naturalist, playing sports, doing skits and theater, and just having plain summer FUN! Camper ages are entering Kindergarten-8th grade. GENERAL DUTIES Being conscious of and protecting the health, safety and welfare of all campers in any area or programs at camp. The development of horse programming for Camp Butwin, its specialty camps and village programming. The maintenance of horses and riding equipment. Keeping inventory of equipment and order of area. Responsible to see that all campers and staff adhere to safety standards, including wearing helmets and proper clothing when riding. Purchasing necessary supplies within authorized budget limit and recommending supplies for the following years. Work with CIT's, Junior and Senior Counselors and other staff in developing horse projects, including those originating outside of the horse area or program period Outlining area programs for the week, specifying activities for each age group and skills to be taught at their developmental level. Responsible for recording planning on weekly lesson plan sheets. Act as the resource person for the horse area in camp. Supervising camp staff in the horse area. Communicate and train staff and campers in safety regulations and emergency procedures. Promote safety within your area and identify any potential hazards Observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques. Preparing a pre-camp orientation of the horse area for staff. Collaborating with the caretakers & maintenance in the feeding, watering and caring for the horses and other livestock in the horse area as specified. Responsible for clean up of horse area, pasture, and all areas throughout camp that horses have been. Attending all staff meetings, open house, special and camp-wide programs, parent-staff meetings and family nights as designated by the Camp Director. Attending weekly individual supervisory meetings with the Assistant Camp Director. With the other specialists and Assistant Camp Director, design and implement weekly Jewish and Israeli themes to integrate into your specialty area. Assumes share of responsibility for bus duty.
